Choosing a hair transplant clinic abroad: the checklist

Medical travel done well gets you excellent surgery at a sensible price. Done badly, it gets you a depleted donor area and a repair bill. The difference is rarely luck, it is due diligence, done before paying a deposit. Here is the checklist we would use for a family member, published in full because we are happy to be measured by it.

Verify the reputation, outside the clinic’s website

  • 1. Independent reviews at volume: look for hundreds or thousands of reviews on platforms the clinic cannot edit, accumulated steadily over years. (Ours: 4.6/5 from 1,475 reviews on Trustpilot, linked from every page.)
  • 2. Read the negative reviews first: every high-volume clinic has some. What matters is what they complain about and how the clinic responds.
  • 3. Check the before-and-after gallery for honesty: matched lighting and angles, stated techniques and timelines of 12+ months. Three perfect hero shots prove less than twenty consistent ones.
  • 4. Confirm the team is published: named team members with stated experience. Anonymous "expert teams" are a red flag.

Interrogate the medical process

  • 5. Who reviews your case before quoting? A medical team reviewing photos, or a sales agent with a price list? Ask directly.
  • 6. Will they tell you no? Ask what would make you a poor candidate. A clinic with no answer has no standards.
  • 7. Who is in the room? Ask how many people work your procedure and what their roles are. (Standard here: a dedicated 6–8 person team per procedure.)
  • 8. What health checks precede surgery? Blood analysis and a health assessment on the day should be non-negotiable.
  • 9. How do they plan your donor area? The right answer mentions your future decades, not just today’s session.

Pin down the money and the package

  • 10. Is the quote written and fixed? Verbal prices and day-of upsells are the most common medical-travel complaint. Demand a written quote issued after medical review.
  • 11. What exactly is included? Hotel, transfers, aftercare kit, medication, follow-up reviews, itemised. (Our packages: from €3,400 Sapphire FUE, €3,600 DHI, all-inclusive.)
  • 12. Per-graft or per-package pricing? Per-graft pricing rewards the clinic for extracting more than your donor should give. Prefer package pricing built from a plan.

Test the aftercare, before you commit

  • 13. What happens after you fly home? Ask for the follow-up schedule in writing. Structured photo check-ins (ours: 1, 3, 6 and 12 months) are the mark of a clinic that expects to stand behind its work.
  • 14. Is there an emergency line? Someone must answer if something worries you at midnight, in your language.
  • 15. Is there a written guarantee, with readable terms? A guarantee is only as good as its conditions. Ask for the certificate terms before booking, and read them. (Ours are explained, conditions included, on the certificates page.)

Red flags that end the conversation

Some signals should simply disqualify a clinic: prices quoted confidently before anyone has seen your photos; pressure tactics and expiring discounts; promises of specific graft counts or guaranteed density; galleries with no timelines; reviews that arrive in suspicious bursts; and any unwillingness to put the plan, the price or the guarantee in writing. Serious medicine survives scrutiny, sales operations deflect it.

Apply it to us

This checklist is not rhetorical. Take these fifteen questions into your consultation with BlueMagic Group Clinic and ask them plainly, then ask them of every other clinic on your shortlist and compare the answers, in writing where it matters. A good clinic is not the one that objects to your diligence; it is the one that gets easier to choose the more of it you do.

Quick answers

Clinic selection in brief

Is a cheaper clinic automatically a worse clinic?

No, geography honestly lowers costs, which is why Tirana offers Western-standard surgery below Western prices. The question is never the price alone but what the price includes and who reviewed your case. Cheap plus evasive answers is the combination to walk away from.

How many clinics should I compare?

Two or three serious candidates, evaluated deeply, beat ten evaluated by homepage. Run the full checklist on each and compare written quotes covering identical scope.

Should the country itself matter in my decision?

Less than the clinic. Excellent and terrible clinics exist in every medical-travel destination. Evaluate the specific team, process and paperwork, then let the country decide logistics like flight time and cost, not quality.

What single question reveals the most?

"What would make me a poor candidate for this surgery?" A clinic with a real medical process answers immediately and specifically. A sales operation tells you everyone is a candidate.
