How a beard transplant works

A beard transplant moves follicular units, usually from the back of your scalp, into the beard zone: cheeks, jawline, moustache, goatee or sideburns. Because scalp hair closely matches beard hair in thickness for most men, the transplanted hairs blend with existing beard growth and are shaved, trimmed and grown out exactly like the rest.

The craft is in the angles. Beard hair exits the skin much flatter than scalp hair and changes direction across the face, downward on the cheeks, outward around the chin, converging at the moustache. Getting those angles right, graft by graft, is what separates a beard that looks grown from one that looks placed. This is why beard work is typically done with DHI implanter pens, which control angle and depth per graft.

Design comes first

Before any extraction, the beard line is drawn and agreed with you, how high on the cheek, how sharp the jawline, how the moustache connects. Density is planned zone by zone: a natural beard is denser at the chin and thinner high on the cheeks, and a good transplant respects that gradient rather than filling everything uniformly.

The medical team confirms graft numbers and design from your photos before you commit to anything.

Candidacy

Is a beard transplant right for you?

Typically suitable if you…

  • Have patchy or incomplete beard growth you want connected
  • Have gaps from scarring, burns or previous surgery
  • Want a defined jawline, fuller moustache or connected goatee
  • Have a healthy scalp donor area
  • Are past the age where beard growth is still developing

May need a different plan if you…

  • Are in your early twenties with beard growth still maturing, waiting may be advised
  • Have active skin conditions in the beard area
  • Have keloid-prone skin, this needs individual medical review
  • Expect uniform, maximum density everywhere, natural beards have gradients

Candidacy is confirmed through your photo assessment, this list is general guidance, not a diagnosis.

Benefits and honest limitations

Benefits

  • Permanent hair in the beard zone that you shave and style normally
  • Design agreed with you, lines, connections and density gradient
  • DHI angle control for flat, natural exit angles
  • Scalp donor hair matches beard character for most men
  • Scarring or burn gaps can usually be camouflaged well

Limitations

  • Transplanted density approaches but does not equal a genetically full beard
  • Very large full-beard builds may need staging over two sessions
  • Mild redness in the beard area is visible for the first days
  • Straight scalp hair in a curly beard (or vice versa) needs honest planning

Donor area numbed first, then the face before implantation begins.

    ≈ 15 minutes

    2–4 hours

  6. 6

    Aftercare handover

Written protocol, medication, first-wash appointment, plus beard-specific shaving timeline.

    ≈ 30 minutes

Recovery, beard-specific notes

  • Days 1–5: small crusts at each graft point; redness fades progressively.
  • Day 2–3: first wash at the clinic, then gentle daily cleansing per protocol.
  • Weeks 2–8: transplanted hairs shed, the follicles remain and restart.
  • From week 2: donor area at the back of the head can be shaved with an electric razor.
  • Month 3 onward: new beard growth appears and thickens.
  • Months 9–12: the result matures; trim and style as you like once cleared.

Risks and possible complications

Beard transplantation under local anaesthesia carries the same low risk profile as scalp work: temporary swelling, redness, itching, folliculitis and rarely infection or reduced graft survival. Facial skin shows redness more visibly than scalp in the first days, plan social commitments accordingly. Full written aftercare and an emergency line come with every procedure.

Questions

Beard transplant, frequently asked questions

Where do the grafts come from?

From the back and sides of your scalp, the same donor zone used for hair transplants. The team selects follicular units whose calibre matches beard hair so the result blends with existing growth.

Can I shave normally afterwards?

Yes, once healed. The donor area can be shaved with an electric razor from about two weeks; the transplanted beard itself is shaved once the follicles are settled, on the timeline in your written aftercare plan. Transplanted hair regrows like any beard hair.

Will it look natural?

The determining factors are exit angle and density gradient. Beard hair grows flat and changes direction across the face. DHI placement reproduces this graft by graft, and design follows how natural beards actually distribute density.

How many grafts does a beard need?

A moustache connection or small gaps may need a few hundred; a full-beard build can run into the thousands. Your photo assessment produces the estimate for your design.

Does it hurt more than a scalp transplant?

The anaesthetic injections in the facial area sting briefly, after that patients feel pressure rather than pain. Discomfort in the days after is generally mild and manageable.

What if my scalp hair is straight but my beard is curly?

Transplanted hair keeps its donor character. Some texture difference can exist, and honest planning accounts for it, usually by placing scalp grafts where they blend best and keeping expectations precise. This is exactly the kind of detail the assessment addresses.
